Chamblee, GA, January 29, 2015 – by Trey Benton and Eli Zandman, Contributor – Yes, you read the headline right. Whole Foods is seriously thinking about opening a new 40,000 sq. ft. store in Chamblee as part of a new development.

Peachtree Crossing, a 9± acre project that is being billed as “the highly anticipated, planned redevelopment of the triangle at Peachtree Road, Peachtree Boulevard and Johnson Ferry Road that will be anchored by an upscale, national organic grocer” is the product of S.J. Collins Enterprises whose portfolio boasts several Whole Foods projects and Chamblee may just be getting the next.

Work has been going on for the past few months preparing the site where Oxford Chemicals Company operated for nearly 50 years until closing up shop in the early 90’s.

The exact address of the proposed development is 5001 Peachtree Blvd. – which is located between Peachtree Boulevard and Peachtree Road, at Johnson Ferry Road.

City Staff tells us they have been meeting with the developer for a few months and working closely with them as they go through the City’s planing and community development process.

According to preliminary site plans and materials we have obtained, the Peachtree Crossing development will feature:

  • A 40,000 sq. ft. “National Organic Grocer” (Whole Foods if it all works out)
  • 64,000 sq. ft. of specialty retail and restaurant space
  • Several “Pocket Parks”
  • Kids Play Area
  • Sitting Areas
  • Public Art area
  • Pedestrian Trail
  • Connection to the Chamblee Multi-Use Trail (a.k.a. Keswick Trail)
  • Farmers Market Area
  • EV Charging Stations

The development includes the Oxford parcel as well as three others that have businesses currently operating on them such as the Ashe-Simpson Nursery, Atlanta Discount Music, a hair salon and the vacant former Paradise Cafe.

Taking a look at Chamblee through a wider lens, other new developments have been announced recently such as The Olmsted, Parkview on Peachtree, and plans for the revamped Chamblee Plaza a.k.a. “The Blee” are all in the hopper.

The Peachtree Crossing Development is scheduled to go in front of the City’s Architectural Review Board on February 3rd, then to the City Council on February 17th.
